May 21st – Struggling

Time spent learning/practising: 54.75hrs
Status: Learning barre chords & theory

I managed about 30 minutes today, but most of that time was looking at the theory book. I did managed to practice the 5 string barre chords and they went well, but not much else.

May 20th – Studying

Time spent learning/practising: 54.25hrs
Status: Learning barre chords & theory

I logged an hour and a quarter today, although only 35 minutes of that was actually practising (still can’t do barre chords), the rest was spent studying a book on guitar music theory which I bought off Amazon (a Hal Leonard book). That was really good because I can’t progress past the barre chord lessons until I am comfortable with them, but as they hurt my fingers then it is hard to practice them for too long, I have to keep breaking off and playing songs until the skin on my finger pops back into shape! So this gives me something else to do in my practice sessions, and as I will soon have 3 books of songs to play, then this theory book will enable me to cheat and understand all the symbols etc on the sheet music which I haven’t been introduced to yet in the course because I haven’t reached the appropriate lesson.

May 19th – Getting there

Time spent learning/practising: 53hrs
Status: Learning barre chords

I got back into it today and did 30 minutes, I now know all the major scales and how many sharps or flats they have, and I have played all the 6 and 5 string barre chords cleanly at least once, but they weren’t easy! So I still have a lot of work to do on them. I ordered two more songbooks yesterday to give me some easy and fun songs to play. I also worked on the opening to ‘House of the Rising Sun’ today which I think I have almost nailed down apart from messing up moving from a D to an A for some reason. I will practice the 5 string barre chords for another few days then I will probably move on because I want to learn more theory, I have a guitar theory book I bought which I might read through as well.

May 14th – Finger hurting

Time spent learning/practising: 52.5hrs
Status: Learning barre chords

I got 30 minutes practice in today, and I managed to get some of the 5 string barre chords to sound ok, but I am struggling on the B barre chord, that needs my fingers to squash up together which I couldn’t do for the A non-barre chord either, so that needs work. I worked on memorising my major scales too, and practised a few of the songs.

May 11th – Done lesson 8

Time spent learning/practising: 52hrs
Status: Learning barre chords

I did lesson 8 today which was barre chords on the A string and key signatures. I now know how to recognise what the key signature is… but I don’t know what significance a key signature has on anything in a song… I was quietly confident about the 5 string barre chords because I could easily press down all 5 strings and get them sounding cleanly, but when I introduce other fingers then it lifts a joint off the middle string of the 5 so I am struggling a bit with that, I need to spend some time tomorrow looking at where my finger sits, I think I might have to use the 6 string position for my index finger to make sure I get the G string to sound cleanly.

I might also look up tomorrow what significance a key signature has!
