June 1st – Moving on

Time spent learning/practising: 59.25hrs

I did 40 minutes today, plus I did an extra 20 minutes Friday night trying to learn Wonderwall, so I added an hour to my tally. I am getting better at Wonderwall, although the up strokes seem a little strange still, I need to slow things down and make sure I am doing all the strumming correctly. I also need to move on because the next lesson in my course is strumming, which might just be handy about now… I did manage to do all the barre chords again, so my finger position still works, it got harder further up the fretboard though, I’m not sure why, but that needs work. Tomorrow is going to be tricky to do the next lesson, so I think I’ll do it Thursday.

May 28th – Doing good

Today was a really good practice. I got in an hour and 15 minutes, and most of that time was spent learning Wonderwall off Youtube (check it out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoRJ3oj778I) which is tricky, but I think I have a good handle on most of it now. It will take me awhile to get it sounding good though. I also practised my normal and barre chords. The position of my finger works well now, so I managed to do all the barre chords easily apart from the B for which I just can’t get my fingers all onto the 1 fret for… and playing it the alternative way is even harder! So I need to work on that, but I am happy the barre chords are starting to come together for me, they were so hard at first!

May 25th – Good progress

I did 30 minutes today, and I did really well with the barre chords, the finger position I had seemed to work really well and I didn’t even need to put much pressure on to get them to sound cleanly, so I made a quick note of exactly where on my finger I touched the top E string. I still struggled with Wonderwall though, the strum pattern given in the songbook seems to be wrong, and the chords do too… unless I use a capo on the second fret, which it doesn’t mention in the songbook…? (and even then the strumming pattern is still wrong) So I am a bit confused by that, either my interpretation of it sucks, or their transcription of the song sucks…

May 23rd – Progressing

Time spent learning/practising: 56.5hrs

I did ok on the barre chords today, and managed to fit in an hour of practising and theory. I worked on Wonderwall a bit more and found out that the 3 string chords in it are like cut down normal chords, like a mini-C chord etc. I am still struggling to understand why there are also chords given above the notes all the time, but I asked on a forum for help with that. The theory book thoroughly confused me again talking about minor scales and scale formulas. I can see why the course introduces you only very slowly to different concepts now, if I had of purchased that music theory book before I started learning then it might have scared me off!

May 22nd – Moving on

I spent 45 minutes today, mostly looking at how to play Wonderwall, but I also practised my barre chords a bit, the normal songs and chords, memorised the major scales and did 10 minutes of studying the theory book about major and minor scales. I think I might move on to the next lesson soon, I am nowhere near mastering barre chords but I don’t want them holding me back all the time, so I think if I can shoot through the rest of the course first, then I can go back to trying to master them later.
